The Cradock Conservation and Redevelopment Plan was instituted in 2006 to fight deterioration and blight in this historic neighborhood. A map of the Plan areas can be accessed through the links above. The Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority (the Authority) is currently working on a number of initiatives in Cradock to further the objectives of the Plan. The Authority is working closely with the City of Portsmouth and with Cradock stakeholders. The Cradock Housing Advisory Group was created to ensure community guidance during the implementation of this Plan. World Changers is an organization of volunteers that partners with local government and community organizations to provide certain types of needful home rehabilitation services. It is a ministry of the North American Mission Board and its focus is to provide missions education and involvement for youths through home rehabilitation. Youths from around the country, along with adult leaders, will come to Portsmouth for a week, working on homes in crews of ten to fifteen people. The 2008 World Changers event in Cradock was the pilot project for Portsmouth and was a great success. To view media coverage of the event, please click here. Interest Forms will be accespted for the 2009 World Changers Project from October 15 - December 4, 2008. The homes that are selected will have the repairs performed at no cost to the homeowner through the volunteer labor provided by World Changers, the funding provided by the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the City of Portsmouth, and the supportive services provided by the Portsmouth Baptist Association. The Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority is seeking public comment regarding the proposed demolition of the duplex located at 17 Cushing Street, Tax Plate and Parcel #04100140 and the seven-unit building located at 20 Cushing Street, Tax Plate and Parcel #04100230, both located within the boundaries of the Cradock Historic District and built in 1919.
